DESCRIPTION
Field Notebooks and Data Collection is structured with one hour of classroom time and one 75 minute outdoor experience every week for 6 weeks. Classroom time will focus on covering two methods of data collection: the nature journal method and the Grinnell Method. We will use How to Teach Nature Journaling by John Muir Laws and study the Grinnell Method based on The Naturalist’s Field Journal A Manual of Instruction Based on a System Established by Joseph Grinnell by Steven G. Herman and The Grinnell Scientific Nature Journal For Scientists, Citizen Scientists, and Nature Journal Keepers by Donna L. Long. We will use the information we collect to help us as we participate in a citizen science project together as a class. We will also cover the importance of citizen science and why our personal observations are useful to professional biologists and naturalists.
